There are many approaches you could try. It's hard to be precise when you don't give any details about the sort of insomnia you are suffering from. If you can get hold of some herbal sleeping tablets, these are sometimes very useful. They won't knock you out the way conventional sleeping pills do. Ideally, you want something containing at least two of the following three: avena sativa, passiflora and scutellaria. If the suggested dose doesn't help, go up a little bit. If that still doesn't do it, try taking two doses, one a couple of hours before the second. Some people have trouble sleeping because of a high core temperature. If that is the case (hard to know except by trying out the cure), then take 20 minutes vigorous exercise about 6 hours before going to bed. This will raise your core temperature, and there will then be a reaction to a cool temperature at the right moment for you to sleep. Alternatively, try a hot bath about 3 hours before bed.Cut out drugs of all sorts and junk food. If getting to sleep is the problem, eat a high carb meal about 2 hours before bed. If staying asleep is the issue, eat biscuits, bread or cereal at bedtime.Relax for a couple of hours before bed time. Have a cool room. Use ear plugs and heavy curtains if sounds or light could be interfering with sleep. Experiment with how your bed is placed - you may find you sleep better if you are aligned in a particular direction..It may be that bottled-up anger or depression is the underlying reason for your insomnia. Counselling or psychotherapy will be the way to go if this is the case.Sleep well!
Its not really directly for insomnia, but it helps.Melatonin.Melatonin appears to have some use against circadian rhythm sleep disorders, such as jet lag and delayed sleep phase syndrome. It has been studied for the treatment of cancer, immune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and sexual dysfunction. A study by Alfred J. Lewy and other researchers at Oregon Health %26 Science University found that it may ameliorate SAD and circadian misalignment,[25] but as of 2006 it is known to affect the timing of endogenous melatonin production, raising the risk that it can exacerbate both clinical depression and SAD.[26] Basic research indicates that melatonin may play a significant role in modulating the effects of drugs of abuse such as cocaine.[27]I used to have horrible insomnia, up for 31 hours commonly. with little sleep inbetween. then i started taking it and my sleep regimine and habits straightened out and now im normal :]You can find it at health food stores, walmart, etc.
As has been mentioned, it would help to know what kind of insomnia you are experiencing and if you know some probable causes.Passion Flower is best for "brain chatter" where you just can't get your head to stop problem solving. Lots of folks get help from Valerian Root, although it can cause vivid dreams. If it is mild insomnia, German Chamomile flower tea can take the edge off. California Poppy works well if you are nervous and fidgety. You might look for a formula that contains several things, sort of a "shotgun" approach. Herbs, Etc. makes one like that, in a liquid extract, that I've heard lots of good feedback about. It's called Deep Sleep.Especially if you fall asleep but wake up in the middle of the night, I would recommend you cut out all caffeine by 2 or 3 P.M.
Medicine can mean both drugs and natural ones. I would encourage you to use more of natural remedies rather than drugs for insomnia. Here are some remedies and methods that can possibly help you:
1. meditation
2. music
3. drink warm milk before going to bed
4. no TV or reading just before hitting the bed to avoid mental stimulation
5. melotonin.
I got the tips from here:

  1. Insomnia Hypnosis offers you an easy, natural way to have a good night sleep. You may be using or have considered sleep medication to finally get some sleep. Unfortunately, the sleeping pills frequently prescribed by physicians can be more of a problem than a solution.
